My Music was created by Tony Shryane and Edward J. Mason, who also created My Word! for the BBC. The first show was recorded July 31st , 1966 and broadcast January 3rd, 1967. A Radio Times article for that week ended “Nearly eleven years ago we devised a programme which you may have heard called My Word!  It is still being listened to all over the world.  Perhaps in eleven years time you will still be listening to – and enjoying – My Music!”   In the event the last show was recorded on November 10th, 1993 and broadcast on January 24th, 1994 – twenty-seven years after that first Radio Times article.  Over 500 radio editions of My Music were broadcast in Britain - on the Home Service for the first series and then subsequently on Radio 4.  It was also broadcast on the BBC World Service and made available to stations around the world via the BBC Transcription Service.  For ten years (from 1977 to 1986) the programme was simultaneously recorded for television.  Over 130 editions were broadcast on the BBC2 television channel.

The panelists for the first eight seasons were Ian Wallace, Denis Norden, David Franklin and Frank Muir. David Franklin's last appearance before his death was broadcast on March 18th, 1973. He was replaced by John Amis, who made his first appearance January 1st, 1974. My Music’s “Chairman” was Steve Race who also compiled the questions beginning with the seventh series in 1972. (For the first six series this task was carried out by Edward J. Mason.) My Music had four radio producers during its long run: Tony Shryane, Bobby Jaye, Pete Atkin and Richard Edis (the television editions were produced by Douglas Hespe). The first signature tune was composed by Graham Dalley, who provided musical accompaniment in the first few series and sign-off music at the end of each show. The second My Music signature tune was first used by the BBC Transcription Service for series 11, although the Radio 4 broadcasts did not begin using it until series 12.

Broadcast dates in this catalog were taken from the Radio Times and, to a lesser extent, from BBC Archive listings.3 The repeat broadcast orders in Australia and the US have also been used as circumstantial evidence of the order of original broadcasts. This is a large assumption – we know there are vagaries in the BBC Transcription Service order as originally distributed, in the US distribution channel (WFMT Fine Arts Network), and in the broadcast stations in Australia and the US. While most of our recordings are those that were edited for foreign broadcast by the BBC Transcription Service, some original Radio 4 recordings are held and are listed in the document. There are two sources for recording dates given in this document: (1) Steve Race’s companion book, My Music (London: Robson Books, 1980), and (2) the BBC Archive listing.

While the collection and this document are both substantial, they are incomplete. The document almost certainly contains errors and there may be internal inconsistencies. That is not to suggest that the research has been in any way sloppy or careless, just to emphasize that slotting a given episode into the series/edition framework can be an imprecise science and may be based on extrapolation and inference.

Comments, suggestions and especially contributions of recordings are most welcome! For corrections or additions to program details, please contact Eric Langford [elangford@csuchico.edu]. For comments on the series/edition framework please contact Charlie Rooke [charles_rooke@hotmail.com

Episodes 6-3 and 6-4 present an unusual situation which several of us have not
encountered elsewhere in any of our collections. It appears that the Transcription
Service swapped the initial segments of episodes 6-3 and 6-4 in preparing TS071
and TS072. We think that this may have been done for timing reasons. There are
many occurrences of the TS omitting segments for timing, relevance overseas, or
political correctness. This is the only known occurrence where segments were
swapped between recordings. We have included the UK version (6-3) and the two
TS episodes 071 and 072. We do not have a UK version (BBC R4) of 6-4 and the
listing here is guesswork based on the remaining segments of TS071. There may
have been an additional segment dropped for timing reasons.

An isolated broadcast of My Music on Radio 4 at 11:30am which wasn’t listed as either
a special or a repeat in Radio Times. This timeslot was usually filled each weekday by
a five- part reading. This broadcast appears to have been an ‘infill’ in a week where
the reading only had four episodes. It is therefore assumed that it was a repeat.
